Fratelli/Brothers tenta di evidenziare le radici spirituali comuni delle tre principali religioni monoteistiche, tessendo insieme i fili della tradizione giudaica, islamica e cristiana in una narrazione metaforica che ruota intorno alla vita del profeta Abramo. Pur facendo riferimento ad una storia così antica, grazie alle qualità universali di questi archetipi, lo spettacolo riesce ad affrontare questioni attuali, riflettendo su circostanze vive nel presente. Esplora le antiche scritture in cerca dei semi di conflitti e contraddizioni irrisolte, che ancora contagiano la società contemporanea, nel tentativo di promuovere il dialogo fra le culture e la comprensione delle origini comuni.

Fratelli/Brothers usa un linguaggio teatrale decisamente contemporaneo. L’originalità della performance può essere trovata proprio in questa tensione dinamica fra tradizione ed innovazione, nel dichiarato richiamo ad un senso spirituale del teatro, ma con un estetica capace di raggiungere il pubblico contemporaneo con mezzi contemporanei. La ricchezza della immagini e delle sonorità, realizzati attraverso la fusione di strumenti tradizionali e digitali, l’intesità scenica degli attori, completamente coinvolti con i corpi e le voci, un uso del testo come azione, intenzione e suono, non solo come parola, contribuiscono a creare una esperienza performativa che riesce a comunicare al pubblico aldilà dei limiti della comprensione della lingua.

La scenografia è semplice ma efficace, nella sua capacità di trasformarsi durante lo svolgimentro dello spettacolo. All’inizio, la scena è praticamente vuota, tranne alcuni oggetti distribuiti irregolarmente in diverse zone dello spazio e una serie di fantocci primitivi, quasi impiccati sopra il pubblico. Sospeso in alto si trova un grande cerchio bianco, in cui le immagini video vengono visualizzate in vari momenti della performance. Le proiezioni sono usate durante anche su altri oggetti e superfici, generando una composizione dinamica di immagini animate che interagiscono con le azioni degli attori. Anche i costumi sono un incrocio tra elementi tradizionali e abiti moderni.

La performance è molto elaborata anche dal punto di vista della composizione musicale, guidata dalla straordinaria voce narrante di Ellen Stewart. Marko Zoranović suona magistralmente dal vivo percussioni, violino, campane ed altri strumenti, riuscendo a produrre un continuo dialogo e una intensa fusione con le sonorizzazioni elettroniche di Jan Klug. A questo si aggiungono le voci degli attori, per formare una performance coinvolgente ed equilibrata, con momenti estremamente commoventi.

Il TEATRO CIVICO JAZAVAC è un giovane collettivo teatrale, con sede a Banja Luka, la seconda principale città della Bosnia Herzegovina e la più grande nella Repubblica Serbska. Per decenni le due uniche istituzioni teatrali della città erano il Teatro Nazionale e il Teatro dei Ragazzi. Al termine dei più recenti conflitti, Banja Luka è divenuta un importante centro nella regione, con nuove istituzioni e un numero crescente della popolazione giovane e scolarizzata. Il pubblico teatrale è divenuto consequentemente più esigente, con una richiesta di aprire a modelli cultuali nuovi. Jazavc si è formato con lo scopo di rispondere a tale necessità, per promuovere la crescita culturale ed educativa della città e del pubblico, attraverso il teatro contemporaneo. La parola Jazavac significa tasso, un animale quasi mitologico nella tradizione di questa regione. Emerge anche negli scritti di uno dei principali autori di questa città, Petar Kocic, a cui la compagnia si ispira. Nei suoi lavori letterari il tasso rappresenta una sorta di eroe satirico e critico, che si ribella all’ingiustizia e lotta per la verità. Diventa il simbolo di un modo di essere critici, in senso aforistico e satirico, nell’esaminare i nuerosi dilemmi della società contemporanea.

The City Theatre Jazavac is a non-profit organization of artists with the objective of creating and organizing all kinds of theatre and art events. It is represented and led by a group of young artists from Banja Luka.The City of Banja Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Erzegovina and the largest in Srbska Republic. For decades there were only two theatre institutions in town: the National Theatre and the Childrens Theatre. After the conflict, Banja Luka has been growing in an important regional centre, with new founded institutions and a larger number of young and educated people. The audience has become more demanding, with a need to be open and exposed to more modern as well as international events in the culture. Jazavac was founded with the purpose of responding to such need, broadening cultural consciousness, education and customs through contemporary theatre.In the tradition of the region Jazavac, the badger, is a metaphor for rebellion and fight for the truth. The name was borrowed from the great writer Petar Kocic. In his literary work the badger becomes a symbol for satire and critique, through which examine the current dilemmas of our society; an attitude towards which the company aspires in its theatre work, being critical (satirical) in ambiguous, aphoristic ways.

DEJAN ANDRIC was born on January 23, 1982 in Banja Luka. He studied accordion in Musical High School Vlado Milosevic, Banja Luka (1989-1993). Currently he is a 4th year student at the Art Academy Banja Luka, Acting Department. While studying he worked under contract with the National Theatre RS, Banja Luka from 2006-2008, and also as External Cooperator with DIS Youth Amateur Theatre Banja Luka 1992-1993 and again 1999-2000. In 2007 he had several arrangements with Cultural Radio Talk-show on Contact Radio Banja Luka. In addition he participated in Student Film Projects and Theatre Projects at Art Academy Banja Luka. He became a member of National Folk Dance Association CAJAVEC Banja Luka working as a dancer and master of ceremonies (1997 – 2001) as well as external cooperator (2001-2008). He has been active in the field of movement and voice in cities all over Bosnia and Herzegovina (1997-2007)

TIHOMIR DAKIĆ was born in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina on April 26th 1980. In 2006 he graduated from the Faculty Of Physical Education and Sport, at the University of Banja Luka. During his studies he played handball professionally for 10 years and was teacher’s assistant for the faculty for two years, as well organizing sports events. Since 2003 he has been a member of the environmental NGO “Center for Environment” in Banja Luka. As part of this organization he was actively involved in several projects and campaigns e is interested in issues related to sustainable transport and has been part of numerous workshops and conferences. During the past five years he has trained and travelled by bike and has organized the 15th Ecotopia Biketour from Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina) to Saharna (Moldavia). After graduating in 2006 he travelled to Italy to do European Voluntary Service for nine months. He was a performer in a rest home for elderly people in Forli’, Italy. He speaks fluent English and Italian, and has travelled to many countries: Germany, Holland, Denmark, Italy, Romania, Moldavia, and Turkey.

NIKOLINA DJORDJEVIC was born in 1978 in Banja Luka, RS, BiH, where she finished elementary and high school. She decided she wanted to study acting and was accepted at the Academy of Arts in 1998 in her hometown and graduated in 2002. During her time in the Academy she participated in TV-films and theatre. Since 2003, Nikolina has been a member of National Theatre of the Republic Of Srpska. She has performed in 20 shows (Shakespeare, Lorca, Andric, Srbljanovic, Moliere, Brecht, Chekov…) and has won awards for her roles and work in theatre. More information at www.np.rs.ba

MARKO DUKIĆ was born on September 21, 1981 in Banja Luka. He studied accordion at the Primary School of Music – Vlado Milosevic. Currently he is a student majoring in sports and physical education at Banja Luka. He is a member of the dance studio ”City Jazz” Banja Luka and has studied and performed Latin and Ballroom dance since 1989. On several occasions he was second champion, and two times a champion in the National Championship of Republic of Srpska in Latin and Ballroom dance. In 2006 he was awarded the Champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the solo male dance category. Currently he trains children for the junior category competitions and public TV shows. He choreographed a production of “Animal farm” (George Orwell), which played at the Children’s Theatre of the Republic of Srpska. In addition he is skilled at web and graphic design and all kinds of multimedia design. In 2009 he will continue his education in design at IT Academy in Belgrade.

DRAGANA MARIĆ was born on February 27th 1982 in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2001 she enrolled in the acting department at the Academy of Arts, studying with Professor Vladimir Jevtović. She graduated at the top of her class in 2005. In 2007, she began her postgraduate studies at the University of Arts in Belgrade, Serbia. In addition she is a teaching assistant at the Academy Of Arts in Banja Luka and is an honorary collaborator at the National Theatre since 2004. She has studied Method Acting – Lee Strasberg at the International acting workshop, Commedia del Arte with Carlo Boso at Avignon, France. She received an award for best female actress at the Festival Kočićeva Srpska Scena Prijedor, 2006 and an award from the City of Banja Luka for cultural contribution in 2007. She is one of the founders of City Theater Jazavac. In her free time she writes poetry.

NENAD MERSNIK was born in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina on September 28th 1977. In 2003 he enrolled in the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, Belgrade, Department for Management and Production in Theatre, Radio and Culture. During this time he worked as a freelancer involved in many cultural projects such as: 38th, 40th BITEF (Belgrade International Theatre Festival), FIST 01 & 02 (International Festival of Student Theatre as one of the founders of the festival) etc. In 2003 the City of Belgrade Department for Culture invited him and his student colleagues to develop future strategies for a new cultural center `Warehouse/Magacin`. In 2006 the Faculty of Dramatic Arts presented him with the “Arhont Award” for best student of the Department for Management and Production. In 2007 he was an executive producer for an outdoor exhibition by distinguished photographer Yann Arthis Bertrand “Earth from Above”. His credits include: technical director/producer of “Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni at 39th Venice Biennale and a producer of TV documentary serial “Other Side of Advertising”, 12 episodes for Serbian Public TV.

ANA RADOVANOVIĆ, born on May 18, 1983, in Banja Luka. In 2002 she enrolled at the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sport in Banja Luka. She has been training in modern dance since 1996. She has actively participated in local, regional, state and international competitions since 1998 with the following results: Bosnia and Herzegovinian State Champion in ‘99, ‘01, .03, ‘04 and ’05, 21st place in 2004 in the World Championship in Show Dance in Riesa, Germany, 12th place in 2004 in Dunaújváros, Hungary, and 7th place in 2005 in the European Championship in Show Dance in Belgrade, Silver and special Silver medal in 2006, in Kopar, Slovenia. During her university studies she was awarded a one-year scholarship by the Banja Luka City Administration for extraordinary results achieved in modern dance. This is the award granted by the City Administration to the most talented young athletes. She played in “Ko je u ogledalu” (“Who’s in the Mirror”), a play directed by Marlene Kaminsky, from the “International Theatre Crossroads”, London.

BORIS SAVIJA was born in Sarajevo on 17.05.1979. He is a senior at the Academy of Dramatic Arts, Acting Department, and also a member of the Assembly of the National Theater of Republic of Srpska. MARKO ZORANOVIĆ was born on 02.07.1979 in Čačak,Serbia. When he was 7 years old he began studying his first instrument the violin. He made his stage debut at a public concert at the age of 10 with the string quartet from his school! After finishing elementary school he started to play drums for a folklore ensemble and in 1997 went to Baden, Germany with the national folklore ensemble. At the age of 16 he started to study and play guitar and continues to play the folklore music of his country. On several occasions he played at the national festival of trumpet music in GUČA. After finishing polytechnic high school, department for Mechanical and Technical Science in 1999,.he went to Belgrade where he studied architecture. He continues his musical education in violin at the music school STANKOVIĆ. In 1999 he moved to Banja luka to continue his studies in Architecture. He has participated in several community workshops, and works as part of a projecting team in Banja Luka. In 2002, he began playing with an acoustic ensemble: “Golden Strings Quartet”- bass, accordion, guitar and violin. He has begun to record his original music in his home music studio. He lives and works in Banja Luka with two areas of the arts that he has a strong connection – MUSIC and ARHITECTURE

DEJAN ZORIC was born on November 23, 1978 in Zagreb, Croatia. With the start of the civil war in Croatia, he moved with his family to Banja Luka, Bosnia & Herzegovina, where he finished Electrotechnic High School “Nikola Tesla”. Two years later he started to study acting in the Academy of Arts, Banja Luka where he achieved B.Sc. in Acting. During his student days and now in his professional career, he participates in many plays as an actor at the National theatre of Republika Srpska and also at the Children’s Theatre of Republika Srpska. He has participated in several workshops, festivals and radio dramas. This year he acted in two feature films: “St George Kills A Dragon” (postproduction) by Serbian movie director Srdjan Dragojevic and “Tour” (filming) by Serbian movie director Goran Markovic. In 2006 together with his colleagues he founded City Theatre “Jazavac/Badger”. They have produced two plays “Shape of Things” by Neil La Bute and “Gavrilo” by Fausto Paravidino and several concerts “Around the World”.

OFFUCINA ECLECTIC ARTS is a independent company established in 2004 in Spoleto, Italy, dedicated to the creation, development and promotion of artistic and cultural projects with an international perspective. It is a multidisciplinary laboratory, a space for work and production that operates in the performing arts, in the audio-visual production and in the design of events and performances. OFFUCINA develops and experiments innovative and specialized technologies, with a particular interest towards the integration of different art forms, and is constantly engaged in developing international exchanges and collaborations. We believe that art is a primary need for contemporary society. JAN H. KLUG

JAN H. KLUG (www.janklug.com) è un compositore e media designer, con una lunga esperienza nell’uso del computer e della programmazione come strumenti creativi, per la realizzazione di performance di musica e video dal vivo. Ha iniziato come musicista, diplomandosi in sassofono presso il Conservatorio di Musica di Groningen (Olanda). Parallelamente, Jan ha sviluppato un interesse particolare per le possibilità del computer a della programmazione creativa. Come compositore e media designer, ha lavorato per numerosi progetti di danza, teatro e film. Dal 1996 è membro permanente del gruppo Poets from Epibreren, un collettivo che fonde poesia, musica e immagini video, vincitori del prestigioso Premio Olandese “Johnny van Doorn Award”. Jan ha creato numerose performances e concerti, in cui fonde musica acustica ed elettronica, accompagnate dall’interazione tra immagini e suoni. Dal 2002 Jan collabora con il regista Andrea Paciotto e Offucina come compositore, media designer e programmatore. Da questa collaborazione sono nate diversi spettacoli, presentati in Olanda, Germania, Italia, Svizzera, Serbia e Stati Uniti. Oltre alla sua attività come creatore, Jan tiene workshop e seminari su vari aspetti della produzione audiovisiva e della programmazione. E’ insegnante presso il “Frank Mohr Institute for Integrated Medias” a Groningen, Olanda.

ELLEN STEWART

ELLEN STEWART è la fondatrice e direttrice artistica del La MaMa E.T.C. di New York, un teatro fondato nel 1961 e che ancora oggi continua a mantenere un ruolo di importanza nel panorama culturale mondiale. Negli anni, la Stewart ha presentato al pubblico americano alcuni tra gli artisti teatrali più influenti al mondo, ed ha creato parallelamente una lunga tradizione di teatro internazionale, con artisti provenienti da più di settanta diversi paesi. Ellen ha scritto numerosi libretti e testi, ha composto musiche e curato la regia di spettacoli presentati in tutto il mondo. Ha insegnato e tenuto corsi ovunque. Ha ricevuto numerose lauree ad honorem, premi e prestigiosi riconoscimenti fra cui il MacArthur MacArthur “Genius” Award e il National Endowment for Arts and Culture negli Stati Uniti. È stata nominata ufficiale dell’ “Odre Des Arts Et Letters” in Francia ed ha ricevuto il premio Les Kurbas “per servizi offerti al mondo dell’Arte e della Cultura” in Ucraina. Nel gennaio 1993 Ellen è stata inserita nella “Broadway Theatre Hall of Fame”, diventando così il primo produttore di teatro Off-Broadway a ricevere questo riconoscimento. In Giappone Ellen è stata insignita dei riconoscimenti “Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette” nel dicembre 1994 e dell’Imperial Award nel 2007. Ha anche ricevuto un Premio per i Diritti Umani dal presidente delle Filippine, Corazon Equino. Ellen desidera esprimere la propria gratitudine alla Fondazione MacArthur per averle dato, con l’assegnazione del premio nel 1986, la possibilità di iniziare la creazione del La MaMa Umbria International, la residenza per artisti situata a Spoleto in Italia.

ANDREA PACIOTTO è un regista che si occupa di progetti nel campo del teatro, delle arti multimediali e audiovisive. Ha iniziato a studiare teatro in Italia come attore e si è poi concentrato principalmente verso la creazione e la regia di spettacoli. Ha continuato gli studi negli Stati Uniti, dove ha ricevuto la Laurea in Teatro (B.A.) ed un Master in Regia (M.F.A.) dal Brooklyn College di New York. In seguito, ha condotto un periodo di ricerca presso il centro DasArts, Advance Reasearch Center in Theatre and Dance dell’Università di Amsterdam, sull’applicazione delle nuove tecnologie nel campo della performance dal vivo. La sua esperienza internazionale è iniziata nel 1990, grazie all’incontro con Ellen Stewart. Da quel momento è nata una collaborazione che lo ha portato a lavorare come attore, ma sopratutto come regista residente della compagnia. Andrea ha collaborato con diversi teatri ed organizzazioni in Europa e i suoi lavori sono stati presentati in Italia, Olanda, Germania, Austria, Turchia, Serbia, Svizzera, Polonia e Macedonia. Oltre agli Stati Uniti e all’Europa, Andrea ha anche vissuto e lavorato in Messico, collaborando con diverse Istituzioni Culturali e gruppi indipendenti, in progetti che spaziano da spettacoli teatrali, eventi multimediali, opere e spettacoli con artisti delle comunità indigene locali. Andrea ha realizzato film e documentari, creato installazioni, prodotto diversi tipi di progetti culturali e sviluppato programmi educativi. Ha condotto seminari e corsi su diversi aspetti del teatro e delle arti multimediali, collaborando con organizzazioni in Italia e all’estero. Dal 2004 Andrea vive in Italia e dirige OFFUCINA ECLECTIC ARTS. Il rapporto con i Balcani è iniziato nel 1996 in occasione della presentazione di uno degli spettacoli realizzati con la compagnia del La MaMa, al Festival Bitef di Belgrado. Da questo primo incontro è iniziata una frequentazione, che si è poi sviluppata a partire dal 2000, con una serie di collaborazioni che hanno portato alla realizzazione di tre precedenti lavori BAD BUGS BITE (2003), PILAD (2006) e il SERVITORE DI DUE PADRONI (2007) per il Festival Internazionale di Teatro de La Biennale di Venezia.

Brothers attempts to illuminate the spiritual roots common to all three monotheistic religions, by weaving together strands of Judaic, Islamic and Christian tradition in a metaphoric narrative that concentrates around the life of the prophet Abraham. By referring to such universal stories, the performance aims at raising questions relevant to the present living conditions. The production explores through the ancient scriptures the seeds of unsolved conflicts and contradictions that still plague contemporary society, in an attempt to promote dialogue between cultures and understanding of the common origins.

Brothers was developed through the combination of ancient archetypes and a contemporary theatrical language. The originality of the piece can be found in this tension between tradition and innovation, following the objective of recovering a spiritual sense of theatre, but through an esthetic that is able to communicate to the contemporary audience with the contemporary means. Rich imagery and sounds, combining traditional and digital tools, actors fully engaged with their bodies and voices and a use of words as actions, intentions and sounds, not only as spoken words, tend to create a language that overcomes cultural and linguistic borders.

The set design is simple but effective, in its ability to transform during the development of the piece. At the beginning, the playing area is left bare, except for some objects distributed irregularly in the space. Suspended above is a large white circle, where video images are displayed in various moments of the performance. Visual projections are used throughout the piece also on other objects and surfaces, creating a dynamic tapestry of animated imagery that interact with the actions of the performers. The costumes are a blending of elements of traditional clothes and modern dresses. The piece is also very rich in its musical composition, lead by the mesmerizing voice of Ellen Stewart’s narration. Percussions, violin, bells and other instruments are skillfully performed live by Marko Zoranović, mingling with the intense electronic score by Jan Klug. And the acting ensemble’s purposeful and well-balanced performance of the vocal score is at times extremely moving.
